Claude Code vs GitHub Copilot: a complete comparison

Claude Code vs GitHub Copilot: terminal agent vs editor autocomplete, pricing ($10 vs $20), pros, and when to use each.

Updated on May 30, 2026

GitHub Copilot popularized AI autocomplete inside the editor. Claude Code arrived with a different premise: an agent that executes entire tasks from the terminal. The two have converged somewhat (Copilot gained an agent mode), but their origin and usage still set them apart. Here is the comparison.

The difference in origin: autocomplete vs agent

Copilot was born as smart autocomplete: it suggests the next line or block as you type, inside the editor. Over time it gained chat and, more recently, an agent mode and a coding agent that opens PRs. Its biggest strength remains the deep, fluid integration in the editor.

Claude Code was born as an agent: you delegate a task and it executes end to end — reading the codebase, editing multiple files, running tests, and opening PRs. It is more autonomous by default and shines in the terminal and automation.

Where each one runs

Copilot has the broadest editor integration: VS Code, Visual Studio, JetBrains, Neovim, Xcode, Eclipse, and others. Claude Code is strong in the terminal and also runs in VS Code/JetBrains (via extension), desktop, and web. If your life is inside a specific IDE, check which has the best native integration there.

AI models

Both are multi-model to some degree — Copilot lets you choose between GPT, Claude, and Gemini. Claude Code runs exclusively on Claude models. Interestingly, you can use Claude in both; the difference is more in the format (autocomplete vs agent) than in the model alone.

Pricing: Claude Code vs GitHub Copilot

Copilot is cheaper at entry: it has a free plan (limited, ~50 agent requests per month) and Pro at $10/mo, plus Pro+ at $39/mo. Claude Code has no free plan and starts at Pro $20/mo. If entry price is decisive, Copilot wins; if you want a more autonomous agent, Claude Code justifies the cost. Check github.com/features/copilot and claude.com/pricing.

Verdict

Copilot and Claude Code solve different needs. For completing code as you write, with the best entry cost and editor integration, Copilot is hard to beat. For delegating entire tasks to an agent in the terminal and on any surface, Claude Code is more powerful. Many developers use Copilot for day-to-day editing and Claude Code for the heavy lifting.

Frequently asked questions about Claude Code

Is Claude Code better than GitHub Copilot?

It depends on usage. Copilot is hard to beat at editor autocomplete and has a cheaper entry; Claude Code is more powerful as an autonomous terminal agent. Many people use both together.

Which is cheaper, Claude Code or Copilot?

Copilot is cheaper: it has a free plan and Pro costs $10/month. Claude Code has no free tier and starts at $20/month.

Does GitHub Copilot have an agent mode like Claude Code?

Yes, Copilot gained an agent mode and a coding agent that opens PRs. Still, Claude Code was built as an agent and tends to be more autonomous on multi-file tasks in the terminal.

Can I use the Claude model in GitHub Copilot?

Yes. Copilot is multi-model and lets you choose Claude models, along with GPT and Gemini. The difference from Claude Code is more about format (autocomplete vs agent).
