Is Claude Code paid? Pricing, plans, and free options

How much does Claude Code cost? See the plans (Pro, Max, Team, Enterprise), prices, whether there is a free version, and which plan is worth it.

Updated on May 30, 2026

Yes, Claude Code is paid: there is no free plan that includes access. The good news is that it is already bundled into the Pro plan at $20/month, the same plan that gives you Claude in chat. Here are all the plans, prices, and when each is worth it.

Is Claude Code free?

No. The free Claude.ai plan does not include Claude Code. To use it you need a paid subscription (Pro, Max, Team, or Enterprise) or an Anthropic Console account (pay-as-you-go via the API). Installing is free — what you pay for is access to the AI model.

Which plan is worth it?

Pro ($20/month)

The entry point, and it serves most individual developers. It includes Claude Code with usage limits that reset periodically — enough for moderate daily use.

Max (from $100/month)

For those who use Claude Code heavily throughout the day. It offers a much larger usage allowance than Pro, reducing the chance of hitting limits.

Team and Enterprise

For companies, with per-seat billing, centralized administration, and security features. Enterprise is negotiated based on need.

API (Console)

Instead of a subscription, you pay for the tokens you consume. It is the most predictable option for heavy workloads, automation, and teams that want to control cost per use.

Is there a discount or free trial?

There is no free version of Claude Code itself. The cheapest way to try it is the Pro plan at $20/month. For occasional, controlled use, the API lets you pay only for what you use, with no fixed monthly fee.

Is Claude Code worth paying for?

If you code professionally, the time saved automating tests, refactors, and PRs usually justifies the $20/month easily. For sporadic use, pay-as-you-go via the API may be even cheaper.
